Default '98 rear drum to rotor conversion

I'm new to this site, but not so new to the world. And I'm getting a little "P"O'd" with my rear braking setup. I've been searching the web looking for a disc conversion that's not going to set me back a couple of K. And I look at my '95 Exploder, it has rear disks. Help! where do it go, OEM, Junk Yard, Hard Parts????? there has to be a solution, and I have to be able to do it it a weekend. The 'ol girl is my work truck. Thanks in advance for you input.

If it were me, I'd go to the wreckers and just switch-you can get conversions but why go through all the work.

I am not sure if you need to change anything as far as the master cylinder goes or if you need to run new lines..?

Perhaps check the donor truck to compare...

It shouldn't be that huge of a task..I have rear discs on mine and they look pretty simple..

Yeah, I've looked into this in the past for other vehicles, my current truck has the 4 wheel disk. Your best bet is to go to a junkyard and pull a whole rear-end out of a truck. I'm not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure you'll need the master cylinder too, and maybe the brake booster.

Be warned though, if you have a 4x4 you NEED to get a rear end with the same gear ratio as whats currently in your truck, if you don't you will destroy your transfer-case.

You could also pull a front diff out of a truck to to match the new rear-end.

When I get the spare cash I want to get a rear-end from the junkyard with a limited slip to replace my open diff, but since they don't offer a limited slip with the 3.31 ratio (what I have now) I'll be swapping out both the front and rear. My junkyard only want $120 for both the front and the back.

We have two for the junkyard, BTW it is a 2WD......

Another question; where on the truck (stock) do you find the rear gear ratio??

Check the sticker in your driver's side door jamb, or on the door itself. It should say "axle" on the bottom right with a 2 digit code under it, find that and let me know and I'll tell you what it is, or I can post up all of the codes if you'd like that better.

Oh, and it should also say what the ratio is on the tag on the diff cover. It will be numerical like "3 55" or 3l55 for a limited slip

Default Axle code

kookookachew,

Thanks for the help. The 2 digit code under axle is "19". I hope this is a clue to my question being answered.

Would this be a good time to change to a different gear ratio? I tow allot and I'm thinking of getting bigger rubber and rims. I like the current setup (ratio) but know it will change the second I put on the new rubber. I there a spread sheet out there somewhere that would give me the information I need?

And thanks to all for your input, it really helps.

Its a great time to switch to a higher ratio, but the only factory ratio higher is 3.73, and thats a little tricky to find.

I can't find where I got my printout of the ratios, but I'll just type them up for you.

18- 3.08
19- 3.55
26- 3.73
27- 3.31
28- 3.73
H9- 3.55 Limited slip
B6- 3.73 Limited slip

BTW: Sorry, but I noticed that your code 19, is actually for 3.55 and not 3.31. I feel stupid now,
