Default 97-03 f150 cai cheap mod!!!

Hey guys I'm new to this forums but I came up with a way to turn your stock air intake into a almost cai. All you need to get is a 4 in filter from any auto store and a pvc reducer. Not 100% sure what it was I used but I believe it was a 3in reducer that fit into the stock intake tube perfectly and gave a place to clamp the filter to. I'll post up a picture I have for you guys. Enjoy!!

So...you turned an actual CAI into a hot air intake?

If I understand it correctly, you made it worse

All you need from an intake standpoint is the Gotts Mod (Google it)

Yeah, you've made yourself a HAI rather than a CAI. The way it is, it will breathe all of the heat coming off the exhaust, etc. The Gotts mod does you no good at all unless you put the air box back on.

Just an FYI, oiled filters.... if not oiled properly, can also coat the wires on your MAF and wreak havoc.

You might want to leave your truck alone until you search things out a bit more.

There is such a thing as being your own trucks worst nightmare. Just sayin.

So what makes the 350$ CAI a cold air intake it's the same thing with a "heat" shield that isn't much of a heat shield because they get hot from the engine heat and then the intake is sucking in hot air

^^

most people should concentrate on maintaining and repairing instead of spending $ on ridiculous modifications. Or more importanly, escrowing cash for the coming day that 15 yr old truck needs major repairs. At best most mods do little good, at worst, they destroy the truck.

But 16 yr olds got to think they look cool.

Just because it's made by a company and costs a lot of money doesn't mean it is good for your truck. The Gotts mod, using a Motorcraft paper filter, is the only way to go with these trucks.

FYI - Nobody is trying to steal your thunder or put you down.... it's just a lot of folks that have had experience with these things are wanting you to keep your truck in good working order. There aren't a lot of "performance mods" for these trucks. You've got a great resource here on this website, and a lot of experienced help. Welcome, and ask questions. It will save you a lot of time and money.

Is this a question or a statement?

The stock system is a cold air intake, it pulls in air from the fender opening, outside the engine compartment.

What aftermarket kits do (even those with a "heat shield") is pull air from within the engine compartment, which is hotter than the stock setup.

The Gotts mod just opens up the narrowest part of the intake (at the fenderwell) for more airflow (which is not needed, but makes people feel good, and is almost free).

As said, with a 15+ year old vehicle, maintenance and reliability should be the primary focus. Performance on these trucks is very expensive.

But hey, if you think it gives you more power and you like it, great.
