Default 5.4L blew a plug

When I bought my 02 F150-7700 last year, it had 98k. I saw that it had most of its orginal parts, like the battery, so I assumed the plugs should be retorqued or replaced.

I pulled one coil and plug and found Autolites instead of Motorcraft. I also found a receipt in the glove box dated in 2013 for 8 autolite plugs, so I assumed I could relax and wait for a rainy day.

I was wrong. Popped the right rear plug yesterday. I bought 8 new Motorcraft plugs and started with that one. I can't get it to thread in at all. Not even cross threaded. It just spins and spins. The little "tunnel" down to the plug hole isn't very big, but I tried it all all angles for an hour or more until my hand was so cramped I couldn't continue. Even tried a few different plugs as well as the old one to make sure it wasn't a bad thread on that plug.

I could understand if the threads were bitched up and it cross threads, but I can't get any engagement at all.

Thoughts?

sounds like time for a thread repair.

When they blow out from being under torqued what has happened is the plug has bounced back and forth to the point where the treads give and pop goes the plug. No amount of trying is going to seat another plug in that hole. Every once and a blew (ha, get it?)moon someone will get lucky and be able to thread a new plug in and have it tighten, you my friend are not that lucky it appears. It's time for a heli coil / timesert. I'd do some research and see which method you'd like to go with. I personally would reccomend the timesert.

I repaired the #3 spark plug hole on our 6.8L last year and recommend the Timesert 5553 kit - http://www.timesert.com/html/sparkplugford.html
Ours still had the OEM plugs with 108k.
With the Timesert kit the head is tapped for a new insert with seat.
The insert is threaded/torqued into the head and provides a new threaded hole and seat for the spark plug.
The insert is held in by torque, thread locker and a nub that is pressed outward from the insert with a special tool that looks like a tap.
With any kit be sure the valves are closed before sending any tap down the hole.
There's are a lot of threads on the Excursion/V-10 forum with good info, too.

100% agreement on the Timesert, if you don't want to do it twice.
