Might try the rebuild route, as the only problem with it is bad bearings, it still puts out 14.6 volts with all accessories turned on. Only problem is I can't figure out how to take the core out. I had the back of the alternator off seeing if I could access both bearings, but couldn't get to the front one because the core was blocked by a part with wires soldered to it and I don't have a soldering iron. Didn't think to get a picture before putting it back in, since I needed to drive the truck still. If a picture will be helpful, I can get it out tomorrow to take a picture. Only takes 30 minutes to remove it. Does anyone have recommendations on a rebuild kit?

To clarify, the alternator used to only put out 11.7 volts (which is why the battery light was on). When I took it out I cleaned the contacts and now it puts out a nice 14.7 volts

Great that you've had no problems with parts from the aforementioned stores, no O'Reilly's around
my location, and never a big fan of AZ parts, especially with the inflated prices, so I'd wait.
Also this is the exact reason I was looking at rock auto. Love the people at the O'Reilly's down the street from me, but won't spend an extra $100 if I can avoid it

By "handy" I kind of meant having the right tools and knowing how to use them. No offense, it's a bit more than typical wrenching. Here are a couple of videos showing how things are done. The first guy skipped over the beating that can be required. There is a bunch of "3G alternator rebuild" videos out there. Many different methods to get it done. I haven't actually done it but I'm familiar with all of the things shown.

If your slip ring is worn out and you don't have a soldering iron you might want to just continue on your original path. Good luck.

Victory Lap is the brand that I have always used. I suggest using a Motorcraft regulator though.

EDIT: I used to get them on eBay, but Amazon has them now.

Definitely going with rebuild, videos were very helpful, also might check local scrap yards for alternators just in case. Even if I have to get a soldering iron, rebuilding it'll still be less expensive than a new alternator. If anyone has suggestions for a rebuild kit, please share.
Just saw the reply about the victory lap rebuild kit, thank you for sharing, might need new slip rings though. Does anyone have recommendations on brands for slip rings?
