This can be a very easy fix if your having the same problem I had over the summer. First you should look on your firewall behind the battery, there are two selonoids that look exactly alike, make sure those lines do not have cracks or melded anywhere, if your not seeing anything pull your battery tray and make sure the lines under there are not melded or cracked, last follow the lines down to the acuator on the transfer case. and do the same. if that does not work shoot the hell out of the actuator with some monkey **** and switch between high and low.

what had happened to me was that my battery was leaking acid and it was being sucked into the vacume lines, melted all the way down to the actuator. I went to the junk yard bought two selonoids for ten bucks (beats 40 bucks a peice at the dealership) changed all the lines and shot the actuator really well.

hope this helps, If your need anymore help p.m. me

If i am not mistaken, one of those actuators by the battery is for the transfer case and the other engages the hubs. Iwould put my money on that.

Other possibilities is the relay for the hubs is out.

They are on the firewall behind the battery . They are black and have two wires going to each of them and vacume lines on the bottom. There are two. The one on the left puts it in 4x4 and the one on the right puts it in 2x4. Have someone put it in 2 and 4 and listen for a click from both of them. If they both click they probally work. Then pull the cover off the 4x4 shift acuater on the front rear. Does it move in and out when someone puts it in 2 and 4 a few times? If not pull the vacume lines of the acuater and see if it pulls a vacume. It should pull from one line then stop and pull from the other when you put it in 4x4

If this is anything like my 94 chevy... (yes I own a chevy one ton, so sue me, I like the Ford better).. There should be a actuator on the front axle that locks them in to gear when the front driveline spins.... I am guessing there must be something to lock the axles to the hubs and make the 4x4 work, I dont have the manual off hand to look.. I am guessing 93 4x4 auto lock hubs.....

yes it's on the passenger side axle and has 3 10 or 12 mm bolts that hold the cover on

the 4x4 shift solenoids are around $30 and the one on the rear is about $100
