Default 4wd complication

Hey guys!

I haven't been able to find anything on here that's similar to the problem I'm having with my 4wd. I have a 99 f150 4x4 5.4 with electronic 4wd. When I flip it into 4hi while I'm driving none of the solenoids kick in and the light doesn't come on on the dash... until I stop. As soon as I get down to about 2 or 3 mph, click click click and the light comes on! I can kick it out of 4wd no matter how fast I'm going but I can't put it back in until I come to a stop. It has worked a couple times in the last week but the only thing I can come up with was that it was a little warmer on the days that it worked. It doesn't make any difference if the truck is warm or not. Any ideas? Are there speed sensors somewhere that might be acting up?

Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure on that.. i'm a firm believer in coming to a complete stop before changing to 4wd. If it works when you come to a stop then come to a stop before changing, simple as that.

I understand what you are saying but something isn't working right. When there is ice on the roads I prefer to just flip into 4wd when I'm going up a hill to avoid spinning out and then I put in back in 2wd when I'm on a flat road again. There's no harm done as long as your tires aren't spinning when you flip the switch. The way it currently works I would have to leave it in 4wd all the time.

pull your wheels off and check your hubs, make sure nothing is loose and they still feel packed.. other than that I don't know.. i usually mess around with manual hubs.

It's not uncommon for the 4wd shift motor to fail. They most commonly fail in cold temps.
