2003 F-150 - 4x4 not engaging immediately???
I have an 2003 4x4 Supercrew F-150 XLT, with 42000 miles on it, just outside the warranty. Well, I purchased it used about a month ago at a liquidation car sale. At the time, I was happy purchasing the truck, considering I was able to get the sales guy to give me $8300 Trade-In on my 2001 F-150 4x2 regular cab with 95000 miles on it.
Anyhow... ONTO my dilema...
The new truck has 4x4 with shift-on-the-fly **** on the dash. I can turn the switch and the 4x4 light comes on and I hear a little click, but if I stomp on the gas, on the rear wheel spin, but it doesn't feel like the 4x4 kicks in. Even if I kick it into 4x4 low, it doesn't seem to lock in immediately. After about 3 minutes it'll kick in.
Just like yesterday afternoon, I backed up to a muddy fence by the barn, put it into 4x4H, and hit the gas, on the rear spun. Backedup and tried it again. I tried engaging it when in park, nuetral, and drive. But, like I said, after a few minutes, then it seems to lock in.
Any suggestions???
Thanks
Tim

I'm just guessing but check fuses first. It does however sound like the fuse is ok since you have the 4x4 light lit. You may have bad hubs. I think I heard something about others having problems with them.
Edit..DUH, I didn't read you post very well. It sometimes take a few to get the 4x4 to engage. I sometimes have to let my truck roll a foot or two for it to engage. I think your probably just seeing the normal delay that I've always seen.

yeah, I checked all the fuses already. I wonder if there is a way to grease the hubs or check the vacuum on the transfer case to make sure that is all working properly.
Thanks
