That works. I suggest using a solder plunger. Kinda like a syringe. It will get the old solder off

Unless your replacing a part on a PC board I would never recommend wicking/desoldering. There is plenty of flux in the new solder to clean and make a good joint. Most excess solder will stay on the iron.
