Oreillys found a missing out coil couple times for me. #3 and #4
But having same symptom again year later. Not throwing a code.
My son loaned me a CarScan Scan tool.
Will it maybe work to find it ?? (I have to learn how to use it)
Or should I just change all the coils for 80 bucks. it has 190K
all plugs replaced 20K miles ago
thanks for any help
You need to use denso coils and they're going to run you about 25 to 30 a piece
90% of aftermarket coils don't last, if they even work in the first place. The spark plug gap is large on these engines, which results in high voltage on the coil before it jumps it. Maybe the cheap coils work on less demanding engines with a smaller plug gap , but they don't work / last on these. This is well known.
I have never seen a vehicle eat cops like these do 😂. But.... It's one of its few minor annoyances. I have 338 k on my truck, I keep a spare cop and necessary tools in it. I had one go out on a long trip one time.
Yeah, it would be smart to just replace them all at once instead of as they fail. I'm apparently not that smart. I am smart enough to watch the misfire counts every 6 month to a year on mode 06 data and replace them before they actually become a problem. Then order another new cop and shove it under the seat... Good for another year or two.
If you want to pay excessive amount for shipping and take a week to get it.... RockAuto is good.
If you've got prime on Amazon, it's a little more than RockAuto but you're going to get it cheaper overall with free shipping.... and you're going to get it faster... Sometimes next day instead of 7 business days .
There's not a lot of things I buy from RockAuto anymore because they're very slow to ship, and for small things they're shipping cost is actually prohibitive
Not to mention Rock auto's return policy is abysmal. Even when they screw up you will pay return shipping and 15% restocking.
I still can get Motorcraft ones on Ebay when I need them
A misfire does not just mean to replace the coil
What if the injector fails?
Pinpoint tests are your friend, you would usually swap coils first and watch the miss travel, that way you can verify the coil being the failure or not

Same coil just more expensive. Denso are Motorcraft coils.
Injector, incredibly rare.
Swapping doesn't always work. Chance are your dealing with a low grade misfire. Shorted turns in the winding. Swapping them can make a coil fire again for a short time under load.
Best way is to test under load w/your phone via mode 6 cylinder history. It gives you the misfire monitor numbers.
Stick around, You'll learn eventually, if you're not afraid to.
Unfortunately, and I hate to say this you do have to watch out for..... Counterfeit motorcraft parts. Both on eBay and Amazon.
You wouldn't think China would go through the trouble to counterfeit a $4 spark plug, but you would be wrong. A $50 coil...... Is basically indistinguishable to 99.9% of people from a $8 coil.... All you got to do is put it in a plastic bag that says motorcraft. It is often the packaging that gives these away, it usually has very very slight differences from legit.
I just know enough to know they're out there, and beware. You can Google it for more information. If chasing OEM parts it's a good idea to purchase from authorized dealers etc.
