Default 1997 F150 problems.

I was on here before, but I cant remember my user name or password, so I am starting over. I had a black 02 f150 stepside. Any ways, I sold it in 08, and now I am the proud owner of a 97 extend cab 4.6. Its a nice truck minus the ricer front bumper. Here are a list of problems I need to get taken care of.

A miss at idle with the ac running. It has a CEL on and I will have it checked as soon as the rain stops. You can feel it really bad from 55-60 mph, then it seems to go away.

Second problem, is the passenger side headlight is not working, even after the bulb was replaced.

Glad to be back, and thanks for your help.

Sounds like the ever popular COP issue. One of them is probably dying or dead. There's a thread somewhere around here on how to check for the bad one.

Good day,
My 97 didn't come with COP's, but that would probably be my first thought too... Bad coil pack, bad wires, or old sparkers would be the first on my list... Clean the MAFS too... The codes will give you a better idea where to start...

The headlight issues sounds like a wiring issue... Bad power or bad ground... Break out the volt meter and see if you have power to chassis ground, then to connector ground... Do the tests at least twice to confirm your readings...

Good luck and please post the fixes...

Cheers!!!

I was swapping out air filters, when I noticed a wire on the coil pack that was sliced. The outer coating only. It hadnt gotten into the mesh stuff below. I had my wife rev the the truck to see if I could see it jumping spark. I couldnt see it, but this also during the day. Im suspecting wires plugs and a FF. Minus that small issue the truck runs great.

The maf had a tiny amount of dirt on it, I cleaned it. Im hoping its not a bad coil pack... On the headlight issue, I will test it further today. Does anyone have a fuse panel diagram? Or one bigger then googles image search? My mac wont let me download a manual from ford either... I was going to check the fuse first.

Good day,

Don't mess with the EGR right now... Swap the coils with each other... Clear the codes and drive it around... Read the codes again when the SES light comes back on... 4 and 7 are on the (car's) left side... If the coil is bad, you should get 1 and 6 misfires... Replace that bad coil that is now on the right side... If 4 and 7 return, it is the wires, plugs, or injectors...

I guess it could very well be possible that the 4 and 7 plug wires are swapped... causing two, kinda dead cylinders... looking at the top of the coil, connector facing you, reading top to bottom, left to right you should have (left coil) 7, 2, 4, 8 and the right coil is 6, 3, 1, 5... I had a really bad running 4.6L once and I pulled all the wires and started from scratch, reading right from the book... The motor fired up and didn't even twitch at idle ~ smooth as silk!!

Good luck and keep us posted as I'm seeing a lot of these mystery "misses"... Thanks!!

Cheers!!!

Thank you so much for all your help. This is exactly what my truck is doing. The plugs and wires were changed, there not the originals, But my co worker didnt do the tune up. It was done by the owner before him. It has just recently started all of this. I have felt a bad coil pack, and it doesnt really feel like that. So Im not sure. Ill try swapping the coil packs and see if that is what it is, you never know lol.

Today I replaced the coil pack on the passenger side, and cleaned the EGR. It helped it, but its still popping and missing. No more codes either. What else could it be? Im pulling my hair out right now. The plugs and wires have been changed. They do not say motorcraft on them. I have also cleaned the IAC, the throttle body, and the Maf. Changed the air filter. Whats left? Fuel injectors and fuel filter?
