1997-2003 Reliability
Hi Y'all,
I know this probably has been discussed many times before but I am curious as to what everyone thinks is the best year and which truck has the least problems after 100k. I know a lot of the truck has to do with the owners and care but is there a year that is known to have less problems and for that matter less costly?
Thanks

Only really major issue is the 99-01 some 02s have head gasket issues. Not blowing but with leaking oil externally on the right hand side of the engine over top of the starter and into the engine valley.
My 97 4.6 was perfect running never had to do anything in the 4 years I had it I traded it in for a 2000 5.4 and thats been a money pit the month I've had it I replaced the thermostat then the intake manifold which is plastic (my 4.6 had a metal one) and now it needs cops but I still love the thing just my experience don't let it scare you away just check the cooling system good and make sure there isn't a miss
And I am getting some rust, the weather here is just like the northeast, but prolly worse

The 4.6 2v is generally more reliable than the 5.4 because the 5.4's longer stroke likes to spin bearings and blow head gaskets after 100k miles. Although it's not a very good comparison because between the cars & trucks, the mod motors are asked to do entirely different things.
I've seen 4.6's in mustangs run past 250k with little more than normal maintenance and parts changing. The 5.4 is asked to tq around a 6k pound truck.
The 4.6's in the trucks run well but obviously are insanely under powered.
Overall, all the Modulars are great platforms with only minimal issues. Most of which creep up in the higher mileages.
The modulars are much better than the old 302 counterparts for longevity.
