03 gauge cluster question
i have a 03 f150 xl 4.2 5spd combo and my gauge cluster has no tach i was wondering if i can swap it with a cluster with a tach and odometer stay the same?
looking to do the same thing. I posted this on another forum.
Is it possable that programing a new cluster is like programing a new key with the pats.
insert one key on-off, insert second key on-off, insert new key on and its programed.
From what I have found people that get a dealership to do this all comment on getting a second key. Thats the only reason I can Imagen. This is the only actual method to programing keys. If you get a new key they look up your vin and flash a new key with the serial for the original key that came with the truck. then with two keys that are programed you can make the PCM learn a new key. I would be willing to bet that if you install a new cluster and power cycle two programed keys it would work.

I just replaced the regular non-tacho cluster with Lightning cluster on my 2003 XL 4.6 truck.
I ordered rebuilt Lightning cluster from Tousley Ford (they'll need VIN and mileage), then made an appointment with local dealership for a swap and match the ECM on the truck with new cluster & program the PATS.
They even hooked up the vacuum line, so that the L boost cauge is somewhat alive.
Tacho does not require any specific wiring since it is part of data stream from ECM (the cluster just decodes the data stream to be displayed in the cauges).
