Default TX tint laws

Just a heads up but I went yesterday to get the wife's car updated on her inspection and everything passed except the window tint. I didn't even know that was part of the inspection process. Her windows were at 20% and they can be no less then 25%. The guy there at the inspection place said they are now required to use tint meters and DPS is really cracking down on them. I called BS and went to another place where I usually get my vehicles inspected and same thing, no pass.

The law has been in place since Sept 2010 but I guess everyone was given a years grace time. So I had to get her front two windows stripped and re-tinted at 25%. Seems ridiculous to me. Since that happened to me yesterday I have talked with two other people that have had similar problems in the last month.

it use to be 35% up front. it's usually the troopers that bust you for your tint.

I think it's still is. I had my tint done just last August and I told them to do the darkest legal all the way around. 35 on the front windows and 5 for the large window in back and limo tint for the strip across the front

They have been testing my windows for years....

Not an expert, but here is my understanding of the Texas laws

I think 35% Film on the windows to the sides of the driver. Factor in the safety glass itself has a slight tint, it ends up about 25% Light transmission(legal amount using the tint meter ).

No tint below the AS1 line on the front windshield (about 5inches from the top of the window) above the AS1 can be as dark as you want.

Windows to the rear of the driver have no restrictions. As long as you have side mounted mirrors they can be spray painted black if you want.

There are restrictions on certain colors of tint (red is one) and mirrored finishes have to be very subtle (25% reflectevness?)

There are medical exemptions for Glaucoma and other conditions.

***If you want to really mess with the inspectors, bring in a 1980 model, with illegal tint, when they refuse the inspection, tell them it is the original tint and you are "Grandfathered". they dig in their books for about 10 minutes, and then pass you..... it used to work for me.

^Not sure they have a choice due to most of their testing gear is tied to the TxDOT vehicle inspection system.
