Headlights always on while driving
Hello. My 2020 F-150's Daytime Running Lights involve having the main lights, tail lights, and signal lights on as though the headlight switch were turned to "on" all the time while I'm driving. If I turn the headlight switch to the "on" position, the lights remain the same, so the "off" and "on" switches produce the same set of lights. If the truck is in park, then the lights are off as expected, and turning the headlight switch to "on" turns them on as expected. Is all of this normal behaviour? I was about to buy a new headlight switch (SW-7421).
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hi there. I do have Auto, but I haven't ever used it. Apparently it turns the low beams on if needed, or when the wipers are activated. I recently installed a new multi-function switch to fix the issue where the wipers come on by themselves on the low setting hope it would fix this as well, but no luck. Maybe it's a combination of the switch and the low-light pyramid shaped sensor?
Sorry, quick update. The Auto setting does exactly the same thing as the "off" and "on" settings are doing; just on all the time while driving, even during daylight hours.

Is the light sensor covered?
If you leave the light switch in 'auto' mode the DRL system should function. While in 'auto', the ambient light sensor tells the computer it's dark and will therefore turn on the headlights. If your sensor is covered it will think it is dark all the time.
I think even Canadian models will reduce the light output of the headlight beam -if your lights are not dimming then you are for sure in headlight mode, possibly due to the sensor.

Thanks for the response. The sensor is definitely not covered. The problem seems like the system thinks it's dark all the time, and that it's on "auto" all the time, which isn't true. I would expect that in the "off" position, only the top headlights are on (not the signal or tail lights), and that they're dimmed. I would also expect that when switched to the "on" position, the signal and tail lights illuminate, and the top level headlights are brighter. Right now, it's as if the "on" position is constantly on, which made me think the switch is bad.

Hi, wondering if and how was the problem fixed. I have exactly the same issues on my 2020 Mustang. Couldn't find anything similar on the Mustang forums so here I am..... thanks.

Hi @Ovipreda ,
It turns out this is just a factory setting. Looking around these days, I notice it on other F-150s, too.
I did, however, download FORScan For Windows (https://forscan.org/download.html), ordered an OBD to USB adapter ( and just adjusted it so that only the low beams are on while in DRL mode.
I didn't immediately see Mustang codes on the page, but I'm sure somebody has them.

it sound like DRL to me. I got confused the first few days too. my old dodge used high beam as DRL, ford uses low beam. it's at half voltage though. if it's DRL, the headlight on indicator on your dash wouldn't light up. if you have someone switching from auto to on during day time while you stare at the lights, you should notice a change in brightness.
