Default Why do I need a tuner for.....

My 05' f150 lariat screw 4x4 with flow master catback exhaust & CAI with 132,000miles?? But my old 2000mustang gt with the 4.6L with the same mods was fine?? No tuner needed...

The 3V 5.4L uses a slot style MAF which is not as forgiving as the old style like in your 2 valve 4.6. The 04-05 5.4L also runs a 14.7 a/f at WOT, and runs nearly lean from the factory sometimes.

Otto, so if my 2v 4.6 F150 has the same mods as the OP then a tuner is not really needed? Just trying to learn...

It is not as dangerous on the 4.6L, however if you want the full benefit of any intake a custom tune will make the most of it. Catback exhaust modifications don't warrant a custom tune.

Not trying to hijack, but would I need a tune if I put a cold air intake in a stock 04 5.4 3v?

Yes. like Otto says, it would be to gain the most out the intake. tons of people run without a custom tune but you run the risk of harming the engine.
