Default whining noise?

Today when I got out of school I got in my truck and when I put it reverse it made a loud bump noise. My foot was still on the brake and I wasn't moving at all and it has done that ever since. When I got home and put it in park it started a low whining noise. The noise quits as soon as you take it out of park. I'm not sure if the two noises are related or not. Any ideas of what could be causing either problem?? 04 5.4

If you have grinding back there and your still driving it,your doing more dammage to your rear end. Also if you have grinding, have your brake vacume boster line(name of the part my be backwards)checked out. There was a recall on it for our generation trucks. It causes the hubs engage causing a grinding noise that goes away if you switch to 4wd.

Could be your power steering pump.I was told thats what it was on mine. Our generation trucks are known for faulty power steering pumps and not lasting.

already had the brake booster replaced. and im doing it in the spring because i go off to college on the 31st. so the truck is going to be parked till i get back for like a month, then parked again, so i wont be able to work on it till spring.

and yes i know, grinding is only going to get worse. but i have no options right now to fix it. im not dropping 1800 when i can do it myself in the spring for about 500

and also, the grinding only happens after rpms drop, and i can avoid the grinding by accelerating harder than a normal driver does

When you put it in gear and get that loud *clunk*, the first and easiest thing to check is the U-joint on the drive axle. Grab it and twist it back and forth with your hand. If it rocks back and forth easily at the joint, easy fix.
