As long as it's detached I would get a cheap hose connector and some fuel line and extend it up to near the gas tank. It will have less of a chance of getting wet and give you more water depth clearance in theory. However, if the diff is hot enough and you drive through cold water you can forget about where the hose ends because it wont matter.
