Default What could this be?

So I was just backing my truck in 4H, and it jerked and made a loud sound in the rear (like I would have backed into a boat/trailer). I pulled up, backed up again and it made the same loud sound/jerk. I put the truck in 2WD and drove up a bit and it was fine, I backed up a bit and it was fine.

What do you think happened?

were you on pavement or another solid high traction surface and possibly turning at the same time?

That would be my guess too, but he said it sounded like it came from the rear of the truck.

Thats wierd. If it was in the rear end it should have done it in 2wd also. If it had to do with the 4wd working/not working the sound would have come from up front

Did you have windows rolled up? Sound can be deceptive when it comes from under the truck. I would have someone outside the truck and try and duplicate the sound. I would agree with the rest that it is hubs.

All I know was it sounded/felt terrible. I was waiting for the truck not to roll at all after that.

I also noticed a couple months ago that when i'd put the truck into 4L, the 4H would light up. 4L never lights up at all.

You have to be stopped, in neutral with your foot on the brake or the transfer case will not go into 4L.
