Default Weird electrical issue - window switches

Folks,

Have a new weird issue; tried to roll down the windows in my 2005 Lariat the other day, and none of the switches worked. Up/down - nothing. Funny thing though, when I moved the switches, the dash heated mirrors indicator *did* light up? Now, the electric lock switch works, the moveable mirror switch works, the switch back-lights work...just not the switches themselves.

Just as quickly as it began, well into he ride, windows worked again as if there had been no problem. Warming up wasn’t a factor, they have now began working in the middle of an hour long ride, and after sitting all night.

I am assuming short, but how the hell do I track down something like this?

Thanks!

Master panel’s are a common cause .. along with a short in the wire bundle between the drivers door and cab.

Master panel? Where could I find that? Do I need to go through each connection with a multimeter to check continuity?

Thanks for the response.

I think by master panel he means the power window switch assy on the drivers door, and to buy one really just pick your favorite parts store or dealer. Im usually ok with aftermarket but would highly recommend a factory ford part on this, so either dealer or online. I found that rockauto was darn cheap for my switch and it was motorcraft. Ive never had the wires break but thats a good start as well besides the hassle and time might be a cheap fix, as it sounds common.

Got it! I hope it is that easy - when the console light for the heated mirrors lit up when I pressed the down window button, I thought “oh crap...”

This morning when I got in, I tried the window down button on the drivers side when the door was open, and it dinged the ‘open door” warning bell each time I pressed any of the buttons...nuts.

With that happening maybe look at the wiring between the door and cab, if a switch is bad the windows dont work correctly, maybe go down not up or vise versa. Maybe its a combo of both.

I tried opening the door and moving the rubber covered wiring bundle around to see if that caused any changes when pressing buttons - but that didnt effect anything...

On that note its up to you on which way you go......replacing the switch would be way faster than fussing with the wiring but might not help. By chance do you have anyone with the same truck you could try there switch maybe to see if theres a change?

No, no one I know...but I do have some DeOxit. I think I will open it up and spray some DO in there and work the switches, see if that helps
