you can remove the VCT solenoid without taking the phaser off and you can reuse the bolt if you want, you can leave the phaser in place

but barring that, if it's already gone and you don't see it in the head or anywhere else visible, probably your only option (aside from taking the whole engine apart) is to pray for the best
