VCT / Cam Phaser Engine Rocking Question
First I would like to thank everyone who has posted information about the VCT Solenoids and Cam Phasers issues. It has been a tremendous help in working on this problem. Some background, my truck is a 2004 Ford F150 V8 5.4L. I bought it about 2 yrs ago with around 98k on it. The diesel sound was there for the cam phasers but it ran fine and after reading up on it, I just let it go.
About 3 weeks ago, my brother borrowed my truck and took it about 2 hours away. When he was almost there, the truck started rocking like crazy at idle, shaking and the oil pressure light would come on. I got it towed to a mechanic in small town oklahoma. 1200 dollars later, they found that the timing chain guide had broken off and fallen into the oil tray. When he opened up the oil tray he found those parts and a lot of sludge in the oil pan. I guess the people before me had not changed the oil for quite sometime. They replaced the oil pump, and fixed the timing chain guide and cleaned out the oil pan and screen. When they turned the truck back on they found it still rocked at idle. But after disconnecting the hookup to the cam sensor on the passenger side (I believe that is what it is called, it is the wire hooked up to the VCT Solenoid) the truck ran great, no diesel sound or any issues (other than the engine light).
I drove the truck back home and read up and thought it was the VCT Solenoid, so I ordered the part from Tasca and replaced the VCT Solenoid on the passenger side. Now the engine still rocks at idle. I am wondering what else it could be. Also, what are the consequences of not hooking up the cam sensor on the passenger side? Thanks for any help.
