Default V-6 mpg?

I'm probably going to sell my 2005 (low miles) and pick up another with higher miles to drop my payment. This means looking at things I didn't think about the first time, such as whether or not the V-6's get better mileage. I'm going to get a SuperCrew, for sure. 2004 or 2005. I wanna know from anyone who's driving one with a V-6 (stock or close to it) what mpgs you're getting and what kind of driving are you doing? (city/highway, hilly/flat)

As for MPGs, I'm assuming you mean the old 4.2. If thats the case, the MPG on those isn't all that great from what I've seen/read. Most people agree that the 5.4 is worth getting because the MPG is just about the same and you get more power. Do you plan to tow? Haul? Lift? Offroad? All that is a factor.

I get in a hurry when I'm vehicle shopping. When you find a deal, it tends to go fast, and I don't want to be left wondering what I should've done.

I think the most I've ever needed to haul was a 3000 lb load of rock. Other than that, it's mostly all washers and dryers and couches, etc. I'm a suburbanite that's not willing to give up the utility of a pickup. If the fuel econ is basically the same, I'm not going to bother.

I've got a coworker with a 2007 Silv. 1500 V6 that gets 22 mpg (seriously). I'd kill for that and was wondering if the Ford V6s had anything like that. I'd settle for 18 honestly.

if i were you id pick up the 4.2 if youre not doing any hauling. but beware that they have way less resale value because, as PR.F150 said, the 4.6 and 5.4 get ALMOST as good as mileage and you can actually hook something up and tow with them. or put a big load of rock or something in the back without feeling like you have to put it to the floor...JMO tho

My dad has the 4.2 with a five speed manual. He usually averages 18-20 around town and can get 24 to 25 on the highway. The only thing he has done is put 285s on from a lariat with 18inch rims. It's a 2 wheel drive reg cab.

Chevy has really tall gear ratios compared to the F150 ( i think our tallest is 3.55 for our model) and their V6 Vortec engines are monsters, my moms SUV has one. Go with a 5.4, especially if you get a SCREW.

Last fall, I bought a low mileage (41,000) 06, F-150 with a stock 4.2 V-6 and OD tranny. The only non stock item was a set of 18 inch Lincloln navigator wheels (extremely heavy rascals). I got terrible mileage as do most other owners I have talked to. On winter formulated gas, I got 12 mpg around town, but did no highway driving in that time frame. This spring, I removed the 18 inch wheels and replaced them with stock 17's. That alone increased the gas mileage about 2 mpg. Next, I swithced to full synthetic oil. Currently, with the summer formulated fuel, I am getting 14.5. That is a mixture of some freeway driving, some boat towing, but mostly driving around town. After talking to some knowlegable, and trusted people, I suspect I could increase the mileage to about 17 or 18 by using ethanol free gasoline. I am thinking of doing just that to see how it works out. I am also planning to tow my boat out of state later this month and will be interested to see how it does on the freeway while towing the boat.

I am extremely surprised and pleased at how effective the truck performs while towing my boat. On both the freeway and around town, I cannot tell the boat is back there, but that may be due to the weight of the full size F-150 compared to the fishing boat & trailer (800 - 900 lbs). It actually does a much better job than my old carbureated GMC with a 350 V-8. I am impressed and pleased with its towing ability. I live in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, so hills are everywhere. Crossing White Oak Mountain on I-75 at 70 mph is a breeze. However, it's kinda funky that to tow anything, I must manually disengage the overdrive. You just have to remember to disengage each and every time you start the engine while towing.

If you're after gas mileage, I would not get a 4.2, V-6. I am extremely disappointed in that respect. All my trusted friends, who actually know something, tell me that GM's are far superior when it comes to gas mileage.

This is making no sense to me.

You're going to sell an 05 which you still owe money on and buy another 04-05 4.2 V6 with more miles to get into a lower payment? Please tell me how it is going to be cost effective to sell you truck (which you may or may not be upside down on) and then buy another one and commit yourself to 5-6 MORE years of payments? Trucks aren't exactly flying off the lots these days (with consideration to fuel prices) so you're probably not going to get anywhere near actual market value for your current truck.

I think you would be better off refinancing your current truck if it is in good running condition. Go talk to your banker and see what they can come up with.

Only had it a month and a half. Plus, if the dealer really wants to sell a truck (and they do), they'll pay off my loan. When I traded in my Taurus, I got $6200 over kbb for it.
