Default Upgrading Trucks

Hey guys,

So I currently own a 1994 F150 that has seen better days. I've been on the 87-96 section for awhile. I'm seriously thinking about upgrading to a 04-08 F150 and am currently searching for a good truck. While I know a ton about my era F150, I would be considered a newbie when it comes to 04-08 F150's. I've searched for other threads on here with info, but nothing jumped out at me. I am mechanically inclined and have some auto tech training, but I just wanted to get your input on things I should look for and avoid when buying a used truck in this era. I do know that the 5.4 can have some well known issues (cam phaser, spark plugs, lifters), but that is the extent of my knowledge. I'm looking for an FX4 SuperCab 6.5ft bed. Any comment or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest getting the newest truck you possibly can, 2007 and newer. The newer trucks have most of the issues (cam phasers, spark plugs, etc.) solved with the 5.4 and will be less of a headache. 2007 is when the trucks received an aux input, so if you enjoy listening to your ipod it's probably a good idea, especially if you don't want to buy an aftermarket radio. The injectors are loud so don't be put off by it and keep your ears open for an exhaust manifold leak. Lastly, if you can, take a look at the fuel pump driver module located above the spare tire to see if it has any cracks. If you do any towing, try to get a truck with the trailer tow package. If your budget allows, try to pick up a tuner as well.

The problems with the 5.4 are well documented but I believe I can speak for many people on the site when I say the 11th gen is a very good truck, I love mine. Good luck with your search.

find a truck that has an engine build date of 10/07 and later.. like jeremy said most all the problems were corrected after that.

Thanks guys. That was a big thing I was trying to figure out, what year to look at. Also, are there any specific spots on these trucks that I should to look for rust? I live in Minnesota and our winters are harsh on cars, so besides the obvious places, anything specific?

Look for rust around gas door. Also - FX4's have painted bumpers so they have a tendency to have rock chips and start to rust. Other than that I have a few paint bubbles from NY winters.

My 2008 has had almost every problem you read about on this forum. Iwe solenoids hubs cam phasers tensioners guides. Spark plugs changed twice no problems changing though... Fpdm rotted vacuum problems and blend door/actuator along with a crank shaft sensor. Transmission has been solid, thinking about getting a newer platinum and selling my money pit.

Keep your truck. They don't make them like they used to.

I agree with this. With all the garbage they add to engines these days, it's not worth it. Unless you have a disposable bank account, keep your older model.

you may have and Engine with the older build date prior to 10/07.. they start selling the model year prior to that...
