Upgrading to 5.4 worth it, or should I go higher?

5.4 with a tuner should be plenty for that. We are towing a 20' TT of same weight with a 06 Expedition with the 5.4 and 3.73 or a 06 F150 with 5.4 and 3.73 and the only thing I am planning on changing is to add a tuner the 150 for better shifting and mpg.

I can't tow with the Exp in overdrive but you shouldn't do that unless you upgrade the tranny cooler. At least that was my understanding. I have heard it is ok to tow in OD as long as tranny doesn't get hot. I don't have a tranny temp gauge in either right now so I don't do OD with the TT.

its not the being in overdrive thats bad its the constant shifting in and out of OD that causes the damage and a trans cooler isnt going to cure that. i dont even think about using OD pulling anything bigger than my enclosed trailer, especially a heavy, high wind resistant TT. my rule of thumb is if the truck cant hold it in OD even going up the slightest incline or change of speed than i shut off the OD. having my edge tuner really helps because i can not only moniter trans temps but it will display what gear the trans is using at any given time and whether or not the TC is locked. it really helps me know whats going on with my truck while im towing.

I have an '07 4x4 scab with the 5.4 and stock 3.55 gears. Even with my 33" tires it has no problem pulling a steel race trailer loaded with a 3500 lb. mustang, race fuel, track tires and gear. I'd estimate that the total weight between the car, trailer and gear is around 7,000 lbs.

If you are thinking about getting a new truck check out the 2011 f150s, they would have no trouble at all pulling your trailer.
