Default Unusual Vibration When Cold...

Hey all,

Thanks for any help up front! The problem: My dad's 2007 F150 4x4 has recently been exhibiting random fits of vibration usually when first getting the truck on the highway. The truck will drive fine on neighborhood roads but when he hits the highway, it will begin vibrating rather violently, so much so that he will pull off the highway. After pulling off once or twice, the vibration usually goes away for the duration of the trip. There are other questions I need to ask him, such as:

1. Where does the vibration come from (front, back, all over)?
2. Is it only during acceleration?
3. Is it always around a particular speed?
4. What tires are you using?

As I find out more information, I'll post it here. I thought I'd go ahead and post now just in case someone here has experienced this and knows right off the bat what is going on. As this isn't my truck, these are the specs to the best of my knowledge:

2007 F-150 4x4
5.4 liter V8
Extended Cab
Truck does have a flat, hard shell cover over the bed (not sure if it matters but thought I'd post it)

Thanks again!

I would first target the tires....perhaps the cold weather "stiffens" them. After a few miles, they soften up a bit....shot in the dark here.

And get the flat fixed....that will surely make the ride smoother!

Whoops - just to ensure we're on the same page...

The reference to "flat" was not meant for the tires. I was simply adding the fact that the bed of the truck is covered with one of those hard, fiberglass shells (for lack of a better word). I figured that this was most likely not involved in any way but included it in my description in the off-chance that someone, somewhere had a loose bed cover that caused vibrations. You never know!

99% sure its the Tires.....If i had to guess, he has the stock 20's with the Pirelli Scorpions? I had them before I put on my Duratracs and on cold mornings they bounced like crazy untill they warmed up. Any tire with nylon in itis supject to form a "Flat" spot in them is left in one spot overnight and its cold out. Aparently the Goodyear SilentArmor's do it to. My new Duratracs wiggle a little on cold mornings untill the rubber studs warm up a little.

Thank you all for the info. I never thought it was the tires, but I’m due for a rotation so I’ll see what they say. I also get a big vibration upon the first couple times using my brakes getting onto the main road. Along with some stuttering when accelerating. This issue is a couple years old and mechanic’s can’t figure it out. Only during the cold months. If I let the engine warm up first, this don’t happen.
