Default Tuning

So I have heard that there have been issues with people having tranny problems with the Edge programmers. And the Gryphon is basically a rebadged Edge. So if one were to get a Gryphon with custom tunes from PHP would these problems not be an issue anymore? I will be in the market for a tuner very soon and I am looking into the XCAL 3 with either VMP or Troyer tunes, but I like the features of the edge. But I would not buy one unless the tranny issues were no longer an issue with custom tunes (I would think the custom tunes would fix that problem since most people with Edges run the canned tunes.)
Any input?

Hey Buck, i ran the gryphon on my 05 and loved it. i don't think you'de have the tranny troubles due to the gryphon being tuned to your truck. not sure if you're planning to run the canned gryphon tunes tho. these would be the same as the edge's canned ones. my gryphon came with 3 custom tunes when i ordered it. i ran the canned tunes until they showed up. i still have the gryphon and am now waiting for my new custom tunes for my new 08 pickup. there have been some torque converter issues with the custom tunes, but Bill can fix that problem if it arises. i love being able to moniter the guages while driving. i'm in the minority here, as everyone likes the xcal 2 and 3. but i'm happy.

accept nothing but SCT programming. I have been running it for almost eight years. That being said, I like my ScanGauge II.....

Thanks 05 Super for your input. Onusnizzle I have been leaning towards the SCT I was just curious about the Gryphon. I will more than likely go with SCT with tunes from either Troyer or VMP..Thanks for the input guys...anyone else have anything to say about Gryphon custom tunes?

I second this opinion. I have the Xcal II with both Troyer and VMP custom tuning. Make sure you talk to whomever you're going to write your custom tunes about the torque converter, they can set it any way you want it. I also have a Scanguage II in my truck to monitor the guages and love it as well.

So what do I talk to them about in reference to the torque converter? Are there issues with the torque converter with these tunes?

Hey Buck, I'm trying out the can tuned Gyphon right now. So far I see no signs of shuddering in the tranny as I did have with the Edge a few years ago. I run Troyer tunes but wanted to add more gauges so I went ahead and bought a Gyphon without custom tunes, which is a little cheaper.

The tunes are pretty good overall but lack the power I have with Troyer's tunes. There is a big difference here and it's NOT really fair for me to really judge them together because my Troyer tunes were done on a Dyno custom to my truck with a 3.5" AF1 intake. The Gyphon tunes are just can tunes so can't run them with the intake.

But I will give a plus on the Gyphon in the department of NO nose dive downshifts when accerating from any speed, expesually in the 40mph range when your around 1800rpms, which is the one thing that seems to be an issue with VMP and Troyer tunes.

So do u think a gryphon with custom tunes would be comparable to an sct with custom tunes whitcrystal?

without actually putting the truck on the dyno to do a true comparison it's hard to say. But atleast it looks like Bill is more capable of tuning these tucks than the canned tunes my old Edge use to have. I may buy one of his costom tunes later to match all my mods and see how the two differ in day to day driving.
