Default TUNERS EDGE vs Hypertech vs Gryphon

Hey Guys,

I am planning on doing some upgrades to my 2005 Screw Lariat with a 5.4 and want to make sure everything will work together and not cause problems for me as I drive it every day. I am not planning on doing anything extreme, no lift no motor work just some bolt on's that will help with a little economy and power. I am trying to keep the budget around $1000 give or take a couple hundred.

So far I have decided on a K&N CAI, and MBRP 3.5 single outlet catback exhaust, but I would like to add a tuner that will pull everything together and give me a little better fuel economy better throttle response and a little more power when I want it. I have done some research on all three of these tuners but I would like to hear actual feed back from end users of these tuners that may have the same mods I am looking to do.

So far I have read that the EDGE Tuner works great as long you leave everything stock. The Hypertech is more for power and custom tunability, and the Gryphon is a mix of the Edge and Hypertech.

Any feedback and suggestion will be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Mike

I don't know where you're getting that Hypertech is custom tunable and can make more power. Hypertech has one of the worst platforms out there as far as their strategies. The Gyphon with its custom tunes is the best out to the three listed for your mods. Also look at the SCT x3 or SCT Livewire for other custom tunable programmers.

I'm not really looking for a custom tune as much as I am looking for something that will work with the CAI and Exhaust. I did read that the EDGE will cause issues if you don't run the truck stock.

Basically I am looking to get better throttle response, better MPG's, and more power when I want it. Rather than mess around custom tunes I would like something out of the box that works and is reliable. I'm not looking to be the big dick at the drag strip or anything like that because I drive it every day. My main concern is throttle response and MPG's

The only true way to account for a CAI is through a custom tune. No canned programmer will be able to fully account for the mods out of the box. Even the programmers that have canned "CAI" tunes are not the best strategies for longevity on the motor.
A custom tune doesn't mean you get a setting that peels the tires. It's a CUSTOM program for your mods and driving styles. This means you can get it tailored to you altitude, driving habits, and overall feel. This leads to your best chance at mileage increases and being the way you want it. If you can open an email attachment you can get a custom tune.

As Otto said check out the SCT X3. Look up VMP tuning. You tell them all of the mods on your truck and they program it to fit your needs. And if you ever change anything just let them know and they can program a new set and send it to you. Best way to go.
If you run the edge the way it comes it will cause your truck to run lean if and when you add the air intake

OH I see what you mean, I thought you were talking about a complete custom tune for max power. I get it now, so the Gryphon would be the best, custom tuned for what mods I put on.

How do I go about getting the custom tune? I have read that you can call and talk to someone there but that was as far as I went because I wasn't interested in custom tunes.

Getting the custom tune is pretty easy. Order your programmer through PHP website with their for or fax in the form, and specify on your order about what tunes you would like and put down all your information. They will send you the programmer with "canned" tunes. You plug the programmer in and will get a HEX code. This HEX code is your truck's computer identity. You email or call in this number to PHP and from there Bill can tailor your custom tunes. As long as you still have the stock intake on you can use the canned tunes while you wait for the custom tunes. Then when your tunes are ready they email you and you go through their server to download the tunes onto the Gryphon.

PHP has a forum for all you ever wanted to know about their products: http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/

Looking at the cost of the Gryphon CS and CTS they are more than I was looking to spend. The SCT X3 is more in my price range at the moment, but my concern is running a CAI and exhaust without a tune now.

What would happen if I run the CAI and exhaust without a tune for those mods?
