I have done full suspension overhauls on 2 of our suspension types now, both UCa's removed easily. How big a sledge did you use?

Yeah, I have a small sledge and it took a few blows, but it always separated easily.

Hitting harder is no substitute for a larger hammer.

Loosen the nut but do not remove it. Hit on the side of the UCA right next to the ball joint. I have never had one not pop out with a couple of strikes from a good BFH (big f&@kin hammer). A small sledge usually.

Yep, leave the nut on and smack it good a few times. I have a sledge like this that I use:

It's kinda weird that the instructions that come with new UCA's and ball joint's state to not strike the knuckle with a hammer, even though it's a common practice. I've done it myself many times. On some vehicles I've even used a small bottle jack to unseat the ball joint. Anymore though, I prefer to use the pullers.
