I would still check the fpcm under the spare even though it doesn't emit gas smell when its bad. maybe an injector is stuck open
So I am digging into this on Sunday, the truck sits until the. I am going to purchase 8 new injectors and install them while I’m at it regardless, if that is th issue or not it’s probably time anyway. Any recommendations on injectors, is it best to go with Motorcraft OEM, and they are the CM5138 correct? I found those new for $33.78 ea on Amazon, does that sound right?

Ford vehicles seem to love Motorcraft parts, that's what I always go with. I am sure you know this but running your tank close to empty is rough on many parts, I try not to run under a quarter tank. You could also run some BG fuel system cleaner through it every once in a while, helps to keep everything clean.

Default You probably know the fuel cools the pump

Keeping tank filled slows condensation in tank from water in air .
Torque all plugs 25 to 28 foot pounds . The boot is probably shot on that plug .All boots should be replaced when doing plugs .
All new injectors are a good idea at your miles.

At that price they are not new, just refurbished or professionally cleaned or an off market new. either way its better than a clogged one

2006 5.4L SuperCrew 4x4 with 104,000 miles. Truck has been running perfectly, within last 6 months have had all plugs changed, pssanger side manifold, and full fuel system clean done by Ford dealer. Also replaced air and fuel filter.

So so while running late for a work meeting the other morning I ran it nearly dry on fuel, to the point of stumbling into the gas station after my meeting. On startup after filling the tank it was running rough at idle, on the drive home it still was running rough at low rpm, but seemed to clear up under load and at higher rpm. Nearly home the check engine came on, too it to Autozone for code read and came back with P0172, P0300, and P0301. I looked them up and found they are system too rich bank 1, misfire cylinder 1, and random misfire.

I put put in some Royale Purple fuel system cleaner thinking that running low on fuel maybe picked up some crud from the bottom of the tank and drove it for a short while. Starting up this morning it started hard (3-5 seconds), blackish smoke and strong fuel smell. Same rough idle seeming to clear under load.

Could a stuck open fuel injector cause this, or more than one? Is that likely the issue, crud from the bottom of the tank? What about a fuel pump problem, I’ve seen these returnless line models have fuel press regulated buy voltage to the pump, if the pump overheated could it be stuck on full pressure? I will have time for more diagnosis this weekend, but this is where I’m at now, looking for ideas from experience, thanks!

If there are mistakes blame my phone.
OP, sounds like exactly what happened to me a few months back. My brother ran the truck dry (2006 F150 FX4). Afterwards, rough idle, strong fuel smell, and absolutely HEMORRHAGING gas. I made it 100 miles on a tank, give or take. Took it to the shop, had my buddy replace the fuel pump/filter, as well as a complete flush of the system. I am by no means an expert on anything, but afterwards everything went pretty much back to smooth sailing. Good luck with your truck!!

It says they don't fit my 04 5.4. I haven't seen any motorcraft injectors for under $100.00 for my year. the cheapest new injector out there for my yr and make is $60.00 bosch from rock Auto. If it says it fits your yr and make then that's a great price. Im confused as to why it fits one 5.4 but not another of that generation

Yep, type in your 5.4 and it fits. Type in my 04 FX4 5.4 and says does not fit. I bet it actually does fit my truck unless they changed them after 04

By the way if you have to change your fuel pump too I was able to pivot my truck bed just enough to get my body in there to get to it. I think I had to remove my rear bumper and obviously disconnect some things but I coud'nt tilt it like some guys do and didn't have to lower my tank or remove the whole bed. I may have put some pieces of 2x4"s on the frame below the bed supports but all in all it wasn't that bad. I think the worse part was digging through my sprayed on liner to find the bots that hold the bed down

They were delivered today, got to love Amazon one day shipping. Sure enough, OEM Motorcraft brand new in sealed packaging. They go in tomorrow, hopefully that does it.
