Default Transmission will not shift to 3rd

If i have the overdrive button off it goes through 1st and 2nd normal but will not shift to drive

With the overdrive on it shifts through 1st and 2nd then its like neutral and revs

With it in 2 i do have engine breaking

Searching around it sounds like a solenoid not working or snap ring busted

What year, what engine, what transmission and how many miles?

OD light on and/or flashing? CEL,SES or wrench light on and/or flashing?

IF solenoid has failed it will set a DTC and warning lights will come on.

If you have a 4r70/4r75, most likely, the direct clutch has failed or the intermediate/stub shaft is broken.

06 5.4 4WD about 130k miles
OD Light is only on when I turn it off on the shifter, no other lights on the dash haven't drove it much it started acting up

Fluid does not smell burnt and is the right color and level

Try checking your TPS. If the sensor is bad I've heard this is a symtom (not shifting out of second).

After doing A LOT of reading about the 4R70W transmission. Not shifting to 3rd could be caused by a bad SSB(SS2) solenoid.
I lost 3rd and OD suddenly with a bad direct clutch I would have noticed some slipping in 3rd or OD before hand.

I scanned the truck but the scanner I have is a cheapo Actron and I dont think it reads trans codes.

Is the SSA(SS1) and SSB(SS2) together on the same block?

I am going to go try to check the resistances of the solenoids

faulty solenoid will turn on CEL/OD light and set a code, since you you have no warning lights and no codes stored, there is a mechanical failure inside the transmission.

On the 2006 truck I worked on recently, the internal splines on the direct clutch drum for the stub shaft stripped... this resulted in sudden loss of 3rd and 4th gear.

My truck wants to shift into 3Rd but just goes into neutral but it grabs a little bit when it revs down could that also be the tps sensor and my chip also says sometimes its running lean and it's not showing any codes at the garage

I bet if you turn overdrive off it will not shift into neutral anymore, but it will be stuck in 2nd gear.

Sorry to say it but I see a transmission rebuild in your future

Default Possible Fix

Hi,

This happened to my 2001 F-150 5.4L Supercrew - will not shift into OverDrive.
Symptoms:
- Shifted fine from other gears.
- When the vehicle attempts to shift into OD, it just revs (like neutral or 100% slippage).
- The OD slippage is worse when it's cold.

How I fixed my truck's problem:
- First, caveat: Of course this may or may not be the same problem with your truck.
(1) Change the transmission filter
(2) When replacing transmission fluid use 2 quarts of TransX (about 1/2 of the 4.5 quarts needed). For the rest use the standard Ford rated tranny fluid. DO NOT FILL ALL THE WAY. It's weird but these transmissions should be run a little low. (It's possible that other brands may work, like Lucas, haven't tried them).
(3) Run for awhile, to mix the fluids. I had to drive about 10 miles.
NOTES:
- This solution has worked twice for my F-150. The problem started when it had about 75,000 miles. It happened again just recently @ 110,000 miles.
- Anyway, it is fairly inexpensive and may be worth a try. As I mentioned I had to do this the other day (Feb 2018), and it cost me about $80 total. ($30 for filter, $20 for 2 TransX quarts, $30 for oil).
- While you have the transmission cover off, you should install a drain plug. They're about $5 and make changing the transmission oil way easier if you ever have to do it again.

Default Need help with my 2008 F-150 tranny

[QUOTE=Mr. Breeze;4319685]Try checking your TPS. If the sensor is bad I've heard this is a symtom (not shifting out of second

Hey,

i been reading posts on the forum about my transmission issue.

i have a 2008 F-150 FX4 with the 5.4 engine with about 160K miles and my transmission is doing the exact same issue that you were mentioning on your response.

it goes good on 1st and 2nd gear and then act like it goes into neutral until the speed is reduce and then again engage on 2nd gear.

i can not go over than 30 MPH.

what TPS are you talking about (throttle position sensor???).

Also the thread is talking about a solenoid (SSB). Do you have any parts number so I can order on eBay rather than purchase at the dealership??

thank you so much for your help and hopefully and can fix that issue soon because I can not drive my truck as is right now
