Great find on Amazon. I just ordered one. I have a 08 regular cab with the 4.6 and here in Texas I never see trans temp below 150. Truck has 123k and I replaced filter (first time, yellow plug was in it, fluid was dark with no metal, magnet wasn't too bad) and pan with drain plug about 500 miles ago. Even on the highway I've seen temps up to 170-180 with truck unloaded. I use the gauge on my edge to monitor it. I'm going to drain it again when I change oil and filter in about 500 more miles.
I know heat is the number one killer of transmissions and had just accepted these temps as normal, until I saw this posting.
Thanks guys!

Edit: while googling this, I found a forum where a guy cut it open. It's just a ball and spring and is controlled like a thermostat. He said his replacement was stamped with 140 degrees.

Is 170 - 180 really too hot though? I'm regularly running around 155 - 165 and was starting to worry until I found this chart. I almost pulled the trigger on that valve from Amazon but I'd rather put my money toward other things (FPDM for example). It seems like 175 is cool enough:

Cooler is generally better. If 175 is good, Then how good is 140?

Absolutely true. Just gonna bump in down my priority list a couple of notches and take care of my FPDM and IMRC first.

I live in South Florida, it not uncommon for the fluid temp to hit close to 200. Both my 6R80 and the 10R80 operate at around 190ish on a regular basis.

Does your 4.6 truck even have the big air-oil trans cooler and thermal bypass?

I believe that they all have the bypass. The difference is that ours has the lines going into the radiator, to the other cooler, those without the second cooler just go from the radiator back to the trans.

My truck has the small cooler upfront and has a bypass valve. It was not a tow package factory truck, although it had a receiver hitch on it when I bought it. I occasionally pull a 16 ft car hauler with a Mustang on it.
I used the dorman pan with drain plug.

For Eric Kleven,
Does your 5.4 have timing issues since its such a "superior" truck to you? I know enough about my truck to check before I buy any parts for it. But, thanks for checking, buddy.
