No Mercon and Mercon V are different. You are not supposed to mix them. Usually Mercon is sold in a bottle that says Dextron/Mercon. That's like people who just put any oil on the shelf in, don't do it.

What can happen if I were to stick mercon v in instead of just mercon?

Was this ever figured out? I have read that Ford came out and said that any Mercon can be replaced by Mercon V. Is this true? Can I fill my t-case with Mercon V?

Ford now has a specific fluid that it specs for transfer cases. Search Motorcraft transfer case fluid on google and it will pop up. About 12 bucks a quart, but the t case doesn't hold much.

I've heard mercon v can cause it to explode. Get transfer case fluid..
