Trans question
So as my screen name states i have an 04 Lariat screw 4x4. I just bought the truck and the previous owner had a reman tranny put in it. It has had a leak somewhere in the bellhousing my mechanic has replaced the front seal twice and even replaced the converter.
I have heard rumors of auto trans building up pressure if u coast the vehicle in neutral causing the trans to overflow or possibly leak.
I drive up a good grade everyday for work and let her coast on the downhill in neutral.(I know its illegal im just tryin to get a few more mpgs)
Am i causing the tranny to leak by letting the truck coast in neutral? If so, what kind of damage am I doing to the trans?

I could be wrong, but I think it's coasting "in gear" that would build pressure if anything. If you're in neutral, there's no connection between your rear wheels and your torque converter or pump.
I'm not a transmission guy, but it seems that a transmission would be designed to handle coasting. How many millions of miles daily do F150's (or any car for that matter) across this country "coast".
And as far as coasting in gear... it tells you right in the manual that it's OK to manually downshift when descending hills with a load or a trailer to maintain control (engine braking).
I'd bet you either got a bad seal, or it was improperly installed.

fend2ride: it honestly only gets me an extra .5-1 mpg by coasting it on my average according to my trucks calculations ( i haven't actually done the math myself)
Driver444: im pretty sure my mechanic knows how to install a seal correctly or i wouldnt go back to him for the last 6 years. and i dont think we could have gotten 2 bad seals.

glad i read this, i do the same thing like before a red light or a hill decent, i guess i should stop if its really causing pressure build up! 2006 scab Lariat 4x4,
