I wouldn't remove any fluid from a running vehicle but that's just me.

I've seen the Dorman pan, but it's a bit tinny (not as rigid/thick as factory one) and that makes me a bit nervous. I use Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle ATF (costs about $10 per qt. in my area)-which is Mercon rated. I only change it every 30K per Ford severe service and put in a new filter. Use WIX filter 58955 from Rock Auto-less than $15 + shipping. Have been very happy with fluid & filter and getting ready to change it a 2nd time soon. Don't put in more than 4 qts-I did and had to siphon some back out.

Yes, you can. I know many will do this to get the fluid out of the pan before dropping it or to get more of the fluid out at once (drain 3 qts, add 3 qts, drain 3 more etc).

I am with diver64 though, I am just not comfortable doing it, although if you do it right, it should not be a problem.

You need Mercon V, not the Mercon/Dextron multi vehicle....

This is how shops that use the fluid exchanger do it. The difference is, they have fresh fluid going in as the old one is removed.

The Mobil ATF I use is both Mercon & Mercon V rated-so no worries
