Tranny/Diff fluid change
Hey All, 2006 4x4 F150 5.4l Auto 105,000km (65,000mi)
I have been lazy and have been taking my truck into Ford for service and oil changes. But my last oil change I got real lazy and took it to a penzoil drive thru.
So the dude shows me the tranny and rear end oil and says they need changing, and quotes me $230 bux. I say no thanks. I thought they were done on the $1300 100,000km service but NO. Grrr.
So f**k it, I'll do it myself.
OK, all of that overwith. What d'yall recommend for a nice repair manual. Haynes or Clymer good enough?
Second, for tranny service do I flush, or just new fluuid and filter?
Its a 4x4 so I will be doing the transfer case and the diffs too.
thanks

I just flushed mine 48,000 miles. $5/qt x 16 quarts=$$$$. Luckily, my buddy works at a garage and used his flush machine. I will be changing the filter in the summer.
I think the front diff is not recommended to be serviced unless it is submerged in water. I would wait till 100,000 miles until changing the rear diff, unless it is submerged a lot.

Should have been changed sooner but at least you are doing it now. Those repair manuals are fine, but you rly don't need them just to change fluids all you need to know is capacities and weights needed.
Take the rear diff cover totally off to drain, clean up the metal sufaces on the cover and housing, run a bead of rtv silicone around it and put the cover back on. Same with the front unless you have a drain plug on the front, then you just use that to drain it. Fill them back up with the right weight for your model year and friction modifier in the rear if you have LSD, and done.
Transfer case just pull the drain plug to drain. Then fill to capacity with ATF. Easy. Yea, ford uses ATF in the transfer case unlike chevy, at least my generation of truck does.
Tranny, I'd recommend to flush it. Thats gonna cost you if you don't have a flush machine to use, probably almost $300 (USD) to flush it somewhere. I forget if thats with fluid or not. But thats the only way to get all the fluid, dropping the pan just gets about half. But even with the flush, you still need to drop the pan and change the filter.
Its easy stuff, its just the tranny needs a machine to be flushed. So really all you need to have done somewhere else is the tranny if you flush it, otherwise its all simple DIY.
