pull the check engine light bulb or wrap it in electrical tape before trading it in.

I hate to say it but when I traded my sport trac in on my 50 I pulled the check engine light. it wouldnt shift out of second gear on the way to the lot. F those car lots. They will screw you over every chance they can.

Don't misrepresent your truck if you choose to trade it in. I have read members posts who felt that they were "screwed by the dealer".
The dealer will probably want to drive your truck anyhow. Dealer did in my case.
I am sure not all dealers are saints, but.........
If you have the aptitude, try Otto's suggestion.

There is a video on U with a ford master tech, decarbons the motor, after getting it to running temp, removes the spark plugs with impact wrench in about 5 minutes and breaks not a one. Check all the vacuum lines real close and the PCV valve and hose. Clean ERG and its module replaced. Clean MAF. Total cost $200 DIY. If your EVAP test isn't complete or is incomplete you may need to replace the Carbon Canister above the Spare tire. $280.

Any dealer goes off of that 'black book', (which is way lower than anything you/we/us can find) dealy for trade in value; then they pit that up against other trucks of the same year/options/mileage to see what they're selling for at dealerships, then they weigh that against what it will cost to get your trade ready to be sold and THEN they offer you a price.

I've sold/traded in about 20+ cars to dealerships of all kinds in the last 15 or so years (not including all the cars I've sold to regular peeps), and all of the dealerships/small lot places did some sort of 'inspection' of it. From the most basic 'get in, start it up, let it run, get out' to the 'take it for a test drive then put it on a lift for a full inspection'.

You take your chances on bringing in a vehicle that you not only know is 'faulty'....but faulty in a way that is plain as day to womever you are selling it to.

I would at the least reset it before you bring it in somewhere. Regardless of the fact that they can fix it almost at cost; they won't (normally) only take off that much of the trade in price. It's usually closer to what it would cost you to get it fixed.

Dealerships don't 'need' trade ins........they only need them if YOU need it to buy something new from them. That's pretty much the standard. Meaning that if you'e going to buy a 50k vehicle from them; they will be more flexible on giving you more for your trade in. Want to buy a vehicle that's only 12k? Good luck on a trade in of any kind, but expect only a grand or two......catch what I'm throwing?
I dont know what your talking about..... When I bought my truck 4 months ago I traded in my 2002 Ford Ranger and they didnt even start the truck. They looked at it got the mileage and that was it. It was at a reputable Ford dealer in Colorado. Same thing with everyone else that I know that has traded in a car here in Colorado.

Just because you havent had the same trade in experiences as me dosent mean I am wrong or you are right.... Dont be such a disgruntled ***** and run your mouth.

One of the statements I truly agree with. Don't trade in your truck, no matter how disgruntled you are, just to get over at someone else's expense. I would at least try to repair it, diy if you can. Impact on plugs, use the tsb on the top of the 2004-2008 forum. Using degenerative language doesn't help the op with his decision. Just saying............

I traded in a Blazer with tape over the abs light, coolant on the floor (heater core blew as I was looking for a new car) and a badly slipping transmission.

I never told them about the bad tranny and they just started the truck in the parking lot and didnt drive it. I wasnt going to tell them about and I sure as hell wasnt going to fix it before trading it in, especially since I had just replaced the motor the previous month.

They asked me if the cd player was staying in it a few times, hinting that it didnt have to so I put the stock tape deck back in when I brought it to pick up the car.

I made the mistake of replacing the timing belt (routine maintenance) on my last car a week before I traded it in. I wasnt planning on getting rid of it but found a killer deal on a truck and bought it. I wish I had saved that $600.

well the dealership (auction direct) offered 8000 for my truck...they put it on a life, inspected it and test drove it lol so when he handed me the written offer i stood up and left, theres no way my truck is worth 8 grand, KBB private party sale says 17,500 and trade in 14,500...to make a long story short am i hurting the vehicle by driving it with these issues (spark plugs, coil pack, dirty TB, bad speed sensor) or can i buy some time and keep driving it?

^^^^^^^^Like I said; they don't go off of KBB. They go off of their own book, then weigh that against other trucks that are similiar (what they're being sold for) as well as taking off what it would cost you to fix it. What happened to you is pretty much what I expected.

If you don't feel like fixing it; your best bet is to just try and sell it yourself.

If you don't feel like fixing it yourself, bring it in and have the plugs done. It didn't cost me much at the Ford dealer and they didn't break any. Coil packs ANY Tom, Dick or Harry can change.

Honestly, you might get 14-15k for private party value, but with some problems, which you have... maybe more like 13k. (KBB is just a guide, not a guarentee)

And I would say dealership is about right, although if you continue to shop at other dealerships for trade-ins, you might be able to get 10k for it.

What all problems are you having with your truck that you absolutely MUST SELL it? If it is just the plugs and coil packs, that is no big deal. A PITA change, but real easy change, just takes time. These are real good trucks when taken care of properly... real good
