Default TPMS Sensors

I'm due for new tires by the winter and my wheels don't hold a good seal anymore after 12 years, so I'm in the market for new wheels/tires. No issues with them (yet), but the question is, since my TPMS sensors are original - 12 years old - While the wheels/tires are being replaced, can I replace the batteries in the sensors or do I need to buy/train new ones?

I would go with the new valve stem style sensors.. you would have to buy new bands also to swap the cradles over to the new wheels. buy the time you bought new bands and batteries... you could of bought new stem sensors.

can you get valve stem sensors that are compatible frequency with the 07/08? i was told by tire shop I couldn’t, but perhaps they were wrong??

i do know that the sensors used In the newer trucks will not communicate with my 08 truck.

TPMS sensors do not have a replaceable battery, since they are 12 years old it might be worth replacing them if the shop doesnt charge you extra labor since your paying to remove the tire already.
Depending on what TPMS tool the shop has I know you can change from the band type sensors to the valve stem sensors, one of the guys who worked my dealer was able to do that with a Autel TPMS tool. I believe he found that his year truck could receive two different frequencies and found that ford used one of those frequencies for certain years of valve stem sensors, thus he bought that certain year valve stem sensors and was able to train them to his vehicle.

Clip off the wires and check your tire pressure now and then.

Old school I know but it works and costs nothing.

I changed to the valve stem sensors when installing new late model takeoffs a few years back. You can get the sensors and the programming tool from Amazon (or others). Just be sure to get the correct frequency sensors for you vehicle.

It was EZPZ.

They will really fail you for a non-critical, non-safety related sensor? I'm glad I live in the Virginia boonies.

thanks. Forgive my ignorance here, but does that mean that I’d need to change the actual stems to stems with sensors, or that I can somehow add sensors to my existing stems (ie do I have to go to tire shop)? Thanks
