Default Torque converter question

My 2004 5.4 runs real slugish and has nopower when the torque convertre locks in 4th gear. It won't go anywhere untill I give it enough gas to unlock the converter. I have an edge evolution and that's how I know when its locked or not. When it locks mytruck gets a deap moan almost like its in to high of a gear or something. Is there anyway I can just like turn the converter off? And what exactly does it do. Thanks

your asking if you can turn the torque converter off ?? You may be able to re-program your shift point for 4th gear with your Edge...don't know what model you have.

You can't turn the converter off because you use it in every gear.
When you are in 4th gear, or OD, your engine is turning slower than your transmission is turning, thus you have less torque per revolution of the engine than you would have at, say, 2nd gear. 3rd gear is 1:1. If you need more engine power then hit the O/D off button, or simply mash the accel. pedal.
As far as the moan is concerned, I think your torque converter is messed up, probably the fins are bent a little or something happened inside of there. Maybe you have a fluid pressure issue. I would take your truck to a good transmission shop and have the thing looked at. You need the converter.

This may help to explain what the converter does:

or just google it.
