timing chains on 2004 5.4
What is showing on the "computer port analyzer" OBD II? Do you have a code? I don't think there is a code for stretched timing chain. Tell us the code. We might be able to save you time and money.

This is what I meant when I posted ???? lol. I wasn't sure what (code?) was showing on the scanner.
Yes it can cause it to jump time . Low oil pressure from blown tensioner seals same thing .Broken guides also . Basically it would be only one of the possible causes. Change those tensioners out to the old style metal ratcheting tensioners while you are in there .
But there are no sensors for chain stretch .
One of the smarter guys on here came up with 122 links/ chain that it only takes a few thousands of wear/ link to get 1/2 inch of stretch possibly overcoming tensioner ability to compensate . But the tensioners are the main failure and they cause broken guides, whipping chains ,timing jump .
So yes what codes are showing up!
I have changed the chains while motor in truck with the whole timing job .Its tough to get that point to take timing cover off . So much hard work , power steering pump bolts are the worst .Passenger valve cover is a trick to do but there are ways .
If you are going in there do it right . Its doable ,check your cams condition early on .
