Default Time for phasers again

Just got word after truck would misfire on one bank, lost a phaser again. First ones made it to 130,000 miles. The second made it to 350,000 miles. Hope next set makes it to 600,000. Time again for the whole party pack. Chains, guides, tensioners, oil pump, phasers, phaser solenoids. So what is another $4000. No warning. Just happened after a start up after running perfect for years.

Holy crap you have 350,000 miles on your original engine? Obviously minus the timing components.

yes, Ford 5-30 full synthetic I swear by it. Uses no oil. First transmission made it to 250,000 and that was plowing snow. 9.75 rear ends are a different story, 4 rebuilds there. 4 a/c compressors, 4 clutch fans, 3 sets of U-joints, exhaust bolts twice. Original fuel pump, second alternator but first never went bad, just replaced it with a Crown Vic police one from a 2006 for 240 amps for plowing 250,000 miles ago. 4 sets of front wheel bearings, 4 sets of IWE ends. Original front differential and front CV joints and shafts. Original transfer case but 2 shift motors. Original fuel pump but on 3rd fuel pump module. Power steering original but steering rack replaced at 15,000 miles under warranty for slop. Got tired of trying to fix 3rd brake light leaks so LED's and sealed it to the cab with black RTV silicone. 7 sets of BFG tires, replaced every 50,000 like clockwork, original rims FX4. Four driver's power window switch sets and 2nd heater core, evaporator, blend door actuators. Never wrecked, never been towed. One flat tire - yes one. On 3rd driver's side seat cover and I only have 1 left that I bought while I still could for black FX4 interior. (very pricey for the last one $400) Gone through 2 sets of Bilstein 5100 shocks and now rides on Fox 2.0. Did the TruTrac rear end and no more clutches or additive to worry about. 7 sets of brakes and rotors all around. 2nd set of engine mounts 2nd transmission mount (plowing is hard on them) 3 blower motors and 5 windshields. 4 sets of Champion 1 piece plugs, 2 rounds of coils. 3rd starter 2nd Odyssey battery. --- Best truck I have every owned and has been run pretty hard over the years.

Ford parts or aftermarket for the timing components? I'm imagining Ford, looking at the lifespan. Also points to the upgraded Ford parts actually making a difference, with the 2nd phasers lasting 33% longer than the originals.

Hydraulic tensioners or mechanical ratcheting type?

Further proof these engines can last if maintained, more specifically, the rotating assemblies in these last quite a while. All the more reason why I'd have no problem tossing timing parts at a 200+ mile engine, there's really no need to pay for a new engine a lot of the time.

not quite the same, but I have E-350 cube trucks also with 5.4 2 valve and one has 550,000 miles on it. Runs as good as ever. The whole key I believe is using 5-30 Ford full synthetic oil its entire life. 5,000 mile changes and only Ford filters. Even this high mileage motor uses no oil. The thing is my employees are very hard on trucks and they hold up. I have a couple more with 400,000 miles and a few with 300,000. I have lost a couple motors in the past from losing valve seats and crashing pistons and bending valves, but nothing I could have done to prevent those. I have not seen a 5.4 survive yet much over 200,000 miles that ran 5-20 oil especially semi-syn. It seems like those motors die around 150,000 to 200,000. With proper care and 5-30 synthetic oil, the 5.4 are like zombies, they can't die.

Good lord, that truck has seen some work!!! I'd say do a compression test before throwing the new timing components on there and see where you're at. It may be worth looking into a reman engine especially since you are going to take it another 300K+ miles!

I went and fixed all the rust last year. Cab corners, rear wheel arches, rockers, endgate, lower front fenders (very light) and patched up the footwells as they turn up by the fire wall. I have crawled under it over the years and kept the frame painted every inch with a scotch brite pad and semigloss black rustoleum paint. I know I should have gotten rid of it several years ago but I bought it new, special ordered it, and never cut any corners. I have owned a 2015 that just got totaled by a stolen car and have two 2018's now, one a Roush. I just really liked my 2006 and always kept it around and kept improving it. I like it because I really don't see many of them around anymore, or the ones I do see are trashed out. Guys are always asking if it is for sale. I just can't sell it. I have owned it too long to do that. I ended up giving it to my oldest daughter. She always liked driving it. She has a car to drive, but usually only takes this truck. She said she feels safe in it. I don't think she will ever sell it either.

The 2v motors for sure are nearly unkillable.

Certainly some good, hard anecdotal data for using 5w-30.
