Default throttle body

After $500 at the garage for ignition coil and throttle body cleaning it's still sputtering and missing. Mechanic says throttle body will have to be replaced. Another $500. Is this something I can do myself? I'm pretty fair in the wrenching dept. 2005 F150 XLT 8 cylinder FI with 255k on it

When was the last time plugs were changed
Same with fuel filter, air filter.
Is the FPDM factory? What about ignition coil boots and springs.
I'd check everything else before chucking another TB at it

And if you go for a new TB, I'd only go for Ford. It'll have both throttle position sensors.

Wouldn't the left side be the throttle motor, and the right side be the actual position sensor?

The motor has one built in for redundancy purposes. The two TPS communicate and when one doesn't read the same it throws a fault code. Safety and all.

Here's something that's got me curious: Is it better to just buy the whole assembly than to replace the original TPS? If I replace the old TPS with the newest updated TPS without replacing the throttle motor, will it cause any problems after doing a relearn? (If I do this, I should probably clean the throttle plate first)

Some guys were able to replace just the TPS; I returned it because I needed to replace the entire TB, which came with the new TPS. I had the code for it.

I replaced my TPS with the newest version (mine had the 2nd gen version) and my mechanic who was working on another vehicle mentioned that it might have been cheaper and better to get a new throttle body with both the TPS and the throttle motor...

my truck has been running like it should just with the Morotcraft TPS replaced and it was a fairly easy job for me...but I don't think I've experienced and benefits from the change either...I had changed the TPS merely because I had the gen 2 version and not the latest gen 3...
