I know similar symptoms can be caused in diesels by low compression, I wouldn't imagine that to be your issue unfortunately.

Basically the cam phasers are for improved has milage and emissions, they were able to do away with an EGR valve because of this. Unplugging the solenoid wont make the noise go away, thats the phaser itself which has play in it and slapping back and fourth inside the engine.

As you accelerate the phasers advance the timing to increase power and when you are at a constant pace, they retard the timing to improve gas mileage and emissions. Im not sure of the long term effects, other than lack of power (which probably wont even be noticable) and poor emissions... and a check engine light on.

Unfortunately its still there, the engine power didn't change much either, not to mention all the bells and whistles telling me something is wrong.

Yep, I've driven it around all day now, its definitely still there.
I'm not going to accept the 'thats just how it is' theory. It didn't do it before so something has changed, just gotta figure out what.

I have this same issue when driving on the highway, but its only does it about 5 times over a 140 mile trip. So it looks like the only person that had success fixing it was by replacing the cats?

Mine too only does it very random on long trips, never does it on short jaunts to the store or such, even on highway. I don't know if it would be my cats since I seem to have plenty of kick down and power, just this intermittent drone the truck seems to have.

Ellis thanks for the trial and error update

I have replaced the entire exhaust on my truck including the cats...no change.

When I had the trans replaced the guy kept it in the shop for close to month trying to fix it. He was very confident that it was in the programming and more specifically something in the programming for the TC. But what I don't understand, is the common ground between all off our trucks is the replacement of the cam phasers...how would that mess with trans programming all of sudden...????

I did have the computer updated at the time of the cam
phaser replacement...did anyone else?

I have never had the cam phasers replaced in mine, it ticks nicely and was told not to worry about it.
