Default Steering Wheel Vibration

Hello everyone,

Just bought an FX2 on March 30. it's a 2007 F150 with 74,000 miles on it. I test drove it and immediately I felt a shimming or vibration on the steering wheel while going on the high way at 65-70 miles an hour and while breaking. I told the stealership I wouldn't buy it unless the fixed it so they said they will fix it and put it in writing.
I took it home and the next day to the service department. they replaced both front rotors as they were deformed, not warped. It solved part of the problem, but the vibration was still there. I took it again the next day and they wanted to balance the tires but they had to send me to a special shop as my tires were oversized (22"). I went to the tire shop and they replaced both front tires as they were ballooned in some areas. It improved the problem. you could tell there was a major improvement. but the vibration was still there. So I took it upon myself to look online and on this forum for threads that talk about the same issue and there were sooo many results, it's a little overwhelming specially after I took the truck back again to the tire shop and this time they replaced all tires and wheels temporarily and the problem was still there.

I'm a little upset at this point, I really like the truck but I hate that vibration on the steering wheel. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do at this point? my next step is to tell the dealer (Team Kia of El Cajon) to forward me to an actual Ford Dealer Service department as they can probably pin point the exact problem, I hope......

I have to go back on monday not only to make this request but also to ask for a full tank of gas since everyone has been test driving the truck and sucked up all the gas

thanks in advance guys.

PS: does anyone know if there is a TSB or recall on this?

I have the exact same problem, tried replacing rotors, balancing tires numerous times. In my research Ive found that it could be anything from your emergency brake seizing up, u joints, control arms, ball joints, unbalanced driveshaft and still the dealership hasnt figured my problem out. Been trying to solve it for over a year now.

if there are so many people with the same problem how come Ford hasn't given a TSB for this? I think they need a little more pressure, has anyone started a petition or something?

I was reading that some ppl were able to solve their problem. I hope I can solve mine as well. I like the truck bu this really sucks.

It could be the 22" rims causing some of it.. A steering stabilizer might cure it..

I'd check tie rods.

negative. All wheels and tires were replaced with 3 different sets. all gave the same issue. I will have them check the driveshaft, and tie rot ends/sway bars/ball joints on monday. wish me luck, I don't want any more steering wheel with massager included.

If that's the case then it could certainly be an inner or outer tie rod... It could also be a stabilizer end link..
I've got the same steering shake at 65 - 70. Although minimal, I could not find any play in any of the above listed components. But, should I replace and adjust everything, I do believe it would get rid of the wheel shake.. I'm running 35x12.5 R20 general grabber red letters... It wasn't very noticeable at all when I was running 275 60 r20 Mastercraft courser tires, but it was still very, very slightly there with them on too.. The 35's definitely amplified the issue slightly..

I've had my tires and wheels balanced 3 times with no fix as well.. It did get a little better when I swapped the front tires to the back.

WHERE did you get your tires balanced?

I got new bfg's installed on my truck last year. as soon as I got the truck back, I took it out for a rip, almost tested the governor rip actually.

anyways, I had a shake in my steering wheel (about 1 7/8 inch back n forth) and I took it back and told them to rebalance the tires. the manager told me "sometimes when you put new tires on the truck you find out you need an alignment." I replied "I told you the truck is shaking, not F****ng pulling to one side"

so they rebalance them again. the result 3/4 of a inch of travel now.

still pissed off, I took the truck to ford. I spent 100 bucks, and had the tires "road force balanced".

end result....

governed the truck out; and not even a vibration of any sort.

won't let tire shops mess with the balancing again, only rotations lol.

i'm just suggesting that you take it to ford yourself; in the end, you could have your home dealer pay you for the bill ford gives you and for your time n fuel.

good luck with the issues man

I agree, I was displeased with town fair tires balancing... I have heard ground force balancing is way more accurate because it actually puts a load on the tire..

well, I don't know how they balanced them, but I can tell you... no issues whatsoever since.

I know they may be factory sized 18's.

the biggest pain I've seen; people not picking rocks out of their treads before they go get balanced up.
