Default Steering Wheel Control

Hi, does anyone know how to hook up a aftermarket stereo but still be able to keep the steering wheel controls?

You have to buy a module to wire in and make it work. If you order the headunit from Crutchfield they will show you which ones to get and usually good prices. They also include the wiring harness and dash kit.

You'll need the following:

Wiring Harness with Amp Wiring Harness with Amp

Universal Steering Control Universal Steering Control
or
Pac Steering Wheel Control Pac Steering Wheel Control

If you have the audiophile package (large sub under rear seat) you need one of these too:
12V to 5V Step Down 12V to 5V Step Down

You'll also need a dash kit. As JShillin recommend check out Crutchfield and then shop around after you get all the part numbers.

I think this is the actual one you need for the steering controls

Would this work for the Pioneer AVH - 100DVD cause I heard that some of the pioneers don't work with this but not sure

I had Best Buy install my Pioneer Avic. I believe the adaptor to do this was about $30 bucks. They installed the entire unit for less than $100 and it worked perfectly. They will also remove the unit and reinstall the original radio for free should you sell the vehicle and want to keep the equipment. At the same time I installed the traffic and Sirius. I was very satisfied and everything worked perfectly. At least with Pioneer, you can actually perform most functions from the steering wheel control. That being said, I still wonder if it's not just as easy to reach over and do it on the radio. Which I seem to do more often than not. Makes me wonder why they bothered with those controls in the first place.

One other thing, they installed the antennae's for all of this stuff right under the plastic dash inside the truck. Everything works great and no antennae's to route and mar up your paint.

Some stereo comes with SWC and you can follow the wiring diagram and user manual to keep it work.
But, not all the SWC buttons work in some units and in some cars.
