you got a great deal by getting it from an auto broker who bought it at auction... i think that likely increased your chances right there of getting something with issues
This exactly. I had a 1994 Toyota pickup that I drove from new. At about 150k it started having problems. Oil pump blew gaskets, power steering pump cracked, alternator went. By 250k it was leaking from every port imaginable and was suffering the dreaded 3VZ-E head gasket leak. One day I was driving home from Denver and POW, PING, CLANK, BANG, BONG! head gasket not only popped, it threw a piston entirely and basically internally exploded. Left me stranded on the side of the road. Every vehicle will do something at some point in its life, the extreme of which seems to be a crapshoot.

Well i just got the truck back today and come to find out, the camshaft phasers were aftermarket so this has been previously done before! obliviously it was not done the right or correct way that's why now i am dealing with other peoples poor mechanical skill. So has far as the 5.4, i retract my statements about the truck and engine. I am the very few and small percentage that has had to deal with this problem. Sucks but there is nothing we can do about that so now she has good as new. The mechanic even said my engine from the inside looked pretty good so i should not have anymore issues hopefully. Cost me $3,000 by the way which hurt pretty bad!

Im willing to bet that 99% of the trucks that have this problem were not maintained correctly over the years. Its not a "junk engine" problem, It's a "dumb owner" problem. You treat them right, they will treat you right.
I have an 04 FX4 Screw with 140k miles. Its had mobil 1 every 3k miles, with the motorcraft filter. The thing is amazing. Quiet, no engine shake, even Idling at 500-550, and it hauls *** with the tuner and straight pipes. Couldn't ask for a better truck...

Yea $3000 sucks but at least she is running good now. Buying used always gives us a chance that the PO did not maintain properly or know what they were doing when fixing something. When I first suspected a phaser/timing component issue, I started reading and because of hearing about all the aftermarket issues, did the right thing and went straight with OEM. Glad you got it worked out.

Costly lesson, but I'll assume you'll use it as a hard lesson learned, and will research any and all future used car purchases for problems, especially when bought through an auction. Sure, deals can be had through auctions, but in most cases, trucks and cars go there because dealerships simply want to off load them quickly; the good ones stay on the used car lots to sell.

As stated many times in this thread, if your mechanical skill sets are few, then buying new with a warranty is a best bet. Buying a used vehicle with 100K or more is a gamble. From your posts, you fared well with the past, but did not with this Ford.

I do have to ask however, why did you pay 3K on the repair, and then get rid of it? You had the issue resolved with good OEM parts (you stated the repair was done once before with poor quality parts, something that has been discussed and ill advised here on this forum).

I have 180K miles on my 2004, and have had no problems other than general wear issues...it is a noisy engine though.

I've got a 5.4l triton in my 06 and it's still going strong... no issues at all... SO before you unload on the forums remember one thing... Not all of us are going to have that kind of luck you're having.

It's just your opinion...
