Default Spark Plugs

I had been doing research on here on the spark plug issue before I attempted to change mine.

I let mine go over 100K miles before I had the courage to attempt it.

Here is my experience:

I replaced 6 of the plugs so far. The first one I took out successfully when the engine was cold it came out in one piece. I used a socket and did it by hand. I took small turns on the ratched then when it got loose I took it out. The second one not so lucky. I did the same but the hex metal portion came out the but the electrode and tip stayed in the engine. I got some needle nose to pull the electrode out but the tip stayed in. I had my Lisle tool on standy so I used it to pull out the tip and put the new one in. I then did 4 more plugs when the engine was warm and they all came out in one piece. 2 more to go (the rear ones on both sides) I will do the other two today hopefully I will have no issues.

There is hope for you all.

I have done it cold and hot. The best luck I have had was doing it hot and hitting them with the 3/8 impact in short bursts. I have done a ton of 5.4 plugs and this is the best way i have found to tackle the job. You still will break one here and there but if they are going to break, They are going to break.

I just did mine on Saturday. I followed the TSB from Ford pretty much to a "T" and got all out without breaking any on a cold engine by hand with a ratchet. '06 91k. I did run into a couple problems that hopefully you do not. I had the 7mm bolt stripped on the #8 COP, it was difficult to get off but ended up finding a tight enough fitting socket and got it out. Must have been stripped by previous owner or shop. Hopefully you have complete success. Good luck!

I would try it by hand first with the engine warm and take 1/4 turns on the ratched and be patient. I did hear a little squeaking at first.

But I forgot to mention that I used the Berryman a while back. I saw everyone use Seafoam but my cousin's husband is a chemist with Berryman and after watching the video I used this product instead. I can't say it helped but when i pulled the plugs i didnt see a lot of carbon.

Replaced mine originally at 105K and none broke. Decided to use Autolite because of the stories with the Motorcraft.

Just did them last week again at 238K, four broke. I had ran 2 cans of seafoam thru the gas tank before I did the change this time. Started with the engine warm. the second plug and the last three broke.

I bought Champion and used a liberal amount of anti-seize this time. I'll see what happens at 350K

I haven't had the courage to change mine out yet, but I need to. what is the sea foam everyone is doing before they change the plugs out? and is there a recommended brand of spark plug to get?
