Default Shifter assembly randomly not working

2007 F150 Fx4 5.4 shifter assembly is randomly not working. When I first start the truck in the morning most of the time I can not push the button in on the shifter and move thru the gears. Also, when this is happening the lights under the letters and numbers (P R N D 1 2) are not lit. If I slap the shifter **** from the right side a few times these lights will light up and only when this happens I can press the button and cycle thru the gears. This will also happen when I'm driving the truck if I park it and leave it on sometimes when I come back I have to do this again. Also occasionally when parked and turned off the truck will not start and turn over but the electronics will turn on. If I am able to put it in neutral it will turn over and start. Not sure if this is related but often when driving if I stop and put the truck in reverse it will not grab and I have to cycle thru a couple times. Thanks for any help.

I had similar issues.
the shift linkage, either at the transmission or at the shifter have plastic pieces that fail.
This kit has what you need to fix it.

Those plastic parts can fail and you won't be able to shift gears, so best to fix this quickly.

Console shifter, right?
I have had to replace two or three of them when they break
I believe no internal parts are available

Yes. I'm wondering if it's something electrical inside I haven't looked yet. The lights under the letters and numbers light up when I hit it and that's when it works. Maybe a harness or connection.

Right, if it is the internal release solenoid failing, I don't think it's available separately

If you examine the shift cable attachment at the transmission, and if necessary the floor shifter, you might be able to see what's wrong.
