Pulled both cam sensors and checked them out and couldn't see anything wrong with them. So I decided to swap the bank 2 VCT solenoid for one of my old ones and it seems to be fine now! When I changed the VCTs it was to see if it got quieter and help with any misfires and sluggishness and it didn't. So I'll be taking the faulty new one back for a replacement or maybe even my money back (parts store guy is a good friend) and use the money for something else I need
It's a good thing you double checked those solenoids. Having already replaced them it did make sense to rule them out... That was a very good hunch you had. Nice job troubleshooting! Now are you still having the intermittent misfire?

Yes I'm still having an intermittent misfire. I plan to order a full set of cops in the new year and I guess I may as well do the plugs while I'm at it. Plugs only have 25-30,000 km on them and they are revised motocrafts. I'm also thinking some high flow cats in the spring as I want it louder anyways

What year is this? In 05 they had an issue with fuel injectors sticking open and closed. When you start it up does it run rough right away or it only runs rough when its warmed up? Did you replace the VCT solenoids or the camshaft Phazers? If it runs rough only while warm I would check oil pressure.

It's an 04 5.4l 3v lariat screw with 217,000 km, gots mod, edge, si/do pipes, no muffler just stock cats.

There are 2 parts that control the systm- VCT solenoids and a cam position sensor. The solenoids are on top of the valve covers and the position sensors are on the front of the engine, in front of the phasers. Not saying the sensor is your problem, but it's something to consider.

So I put my exchanged replacement VCT in today. The new one is made by a someone else so I'm wondering if theres a lot of problems with them for them to change suppliers. Problem is this one was even worse. I put it in and did an oil change and replaced my air filter at the same time today and didn't even drive 20kms and it's doing it again :/. My buddy at the parts store is stumped and says he has another one sitting there for me if I want to try one more but I'm starting to wonder if I should go with a ford part.

New codes are P0022, P0171, P0174. Which makes me wonder if it's actually is the VCT or not ?
