First off I have a 2008 Screw 5.4
On cold starts anywhere from completely cold to 3/8 on temp guage I intermittently hear a roaring sound from the engine for a few seconds to a minute of driving. Im pretty sure it is the fan clutch but why would that go bad on a 2008 with 70k miles. I am fairly educated the workings of our trucks but have never looked into how the fan clutches work. If somebody could help diagnose the problem and enlighten me on fan clutches it would be appreciated. Thanks

I personally like that sound makes it sound like a truck in low gear with a heavy load.

thats interesting because my brother's 2003 durango does it worse than anything. His got progressively worse so I don't want my F150 to do the same thing.

It's just the fan clutch at full lockup.

I understand that, but why is it locking up on cold starts. I've read that the 5.4 has a electronic fan clutch. Does somebody know how it is malfunctioning?

Mine does the same thing and it just started doing it one day. I'm interested in the solution if this is indeed a problem. It didn't always do it and when I put the truck in gear it stops.
