Default Replacement key and keyfob

Did some searches and read some stuff from quite a ways back that I'd like to validate. I have an '08 Screw that only came with 1 key and 1 keyfob, I'd like to get a 2nd as a backup.

Based on what I've read, am I ok to buy a key and keyfob from eBay, then take it to EITHER my local dealership, or a local locksmith? I realize the keys have a chip that will need to be coded but didn't realize locksmiths could do that as well.

Also, are there key and keyfob combos (as in, not separate like my current ones) that I could use? would prefer the single unit ones as a replacement if possible, ie

instead of

Thanks in advance.

I am currently doing this. My locksmith told me to order my key fob from Amazon and beware of eBay. Amazon has my key for $20 and my locksmith is going to charge me $60 to cut it and program it.

I've been using these fobs with very good success. Comes with easy instructions. Both will be programmed in 10 seconds

As far as the key goes, almost any locksmith or walmart can cut transmitter keys there for a LOT less than going to the stealership

damn that is certainly cheap, did you also buy the key itself from amazon? if i were to buy on ebay i'd certainly buy an oem key (like the one i linked) and i really would prefer a 1 pc fob and key.

with that said, any locksmith should be able to cut and code, even if i currently only have the 1 original key right?

I've gotten the generic key at a local lock Smith. Yes, they can cut and code from one key

Yes. They don't code using your key to do the programming, they plug a box into your truck and use the ECU to code the ECU to recognize the transponder on the key. It should take like ten minutes for the programming to take.

Once you have your second key, you can then program any others you want without using a locksmith.

Also if you get one "made" at a home depot or whatnot, they can clone your current key, but that's all they can do, clone. They can't program a new one because they don't have a box to plug into the truck.

As far as the Ebay key/fob single piece it says it will work. I would contact the seller and ask what would be your options if it didn't program. Save that info in case they try to change their mind. I ordered a key/fob single piece off ebay for my 02 and it programmed and worked great! If you have WalMart or Home Depot or similar CLONE your key you will not be able to use that cloned key to program new keys in the future. A cloned key will work just fine for operating the vehicle but not programming new keys. You must have 2 separate keys actually programmed in the trucks computer to use them to program new keys. Personally I would have your new key programmed the right way.

key for these trucks. Check you're local Home Depot or Lowes; they too sell/cut and program a PATS key. It was 60 bucks total.

Might depend on if it's an actual locksmith or a guy that just uses the machine in the store. Some stores have actual locksmiths.
